A massive hay fire in New Garden Township sent one firefighter to the hospital. Avondale firefighters spent yesterday afternoon dealing with the fire at J.D. Mushrooms located on Ellicott Road. The fire was reported just before noon and was under control around 4:00p.m. One firefighter was taken to Jennersville Regional Hospital for treatment for heat related issues. The bales covered an area of 80 feet by 150 feet and were 15 feet high. J.D. Mushrooms employees used loaders to move bales away from the pile that was burning. Tankers shuttled water to the scene and officials are currently investigating spontaneous combustion as a cause.
